Sri Lanka’s southern beaches are among the most important sea turtle nesting sites in the Indian Ocean, providing habitat for five of the world’s seven marine turtle species, including the giant leatherback, green, hawksbill, olive ridley and loggerhead turtles. Our conservation-focused turtle experiences connect travellers with certified hatcheries and protected beach programmes, where local conservationists work year-round to collect and protect nests, care for injured adults and shepherd hatchlings to the sea. Visitors can observe and participate in responsible turtle release programmes, learning about the challenges facing marine turtle populations and the local efforts being made to protect them.
